Thoughts on the Month
April was an interesting month. Overall, there was a whole lot of quality, but it was really unbalanced. Korean male artists, indie or idol, had the best month. Female artists as a whole had a pretty underwhelming month, with a few exceptions. With a few exceptions, J-Pop seemed to be asleep, at least those exceptions were great. The rest of the music world seemed absent. I think there is only one or so honorable mention from outside Korea or Japan this month. Compare this to March, where the quality was evenly distributed, and you can easily see the difference.
It was also a great month for MVs, which finally are returning to their original purpose, being visual compliments to the audio, rather than vice-versa. A lot of MVs led trailblazing songs, many of which were divisive.
Yeah, there was a lot of divisiveness this month. In Asian music, OnlyOneOf's new EP gained attention for its blatant sensuality. Personally, I was not as fond of the song as many, but it certainly has become a must-listen for the month simply due to how it turned heads.
Finally, and most surprising. April is the first month since last year's February where Japan did not take the top song of the month spot. More than anything, it just shows J-Pop's consistency recently. J-Rock took number 2 for this month. Number 5 was a bit of a toss-up actually, with Ninety One, ONF, Enhypen, Exile, 3YE, Ren, Kim Jaehwan, and Wendy all cutting really close to the spot, particularly Wendy, who made it in an initial draft.
