Epitaph Album Review: TVXQ! - Like Snow White

Epitaph | Like Snow White | Small Talk | Mahoroba | Storm Chaser | Light My Moon Like This

TVXQ's new EP is quite solid, expanding on their post-2014 R&B sound. Opening b-side Like Snow White is a strong successor to title track Epitaph, slowly moving the album into smoother territory with its groovy beat. The song's title hints at a sentimental ballad, but the song very soon flips expectations, Like Snow White is a groovy downtown funk track.

The central attraction in Like Snow White is the crisp, baked bass central to the track. It is groovy, funky, but more than anything, atmospheric. In a way, it is a clear TVXQ take on the '70s funk trend at the moment. At the same time, it expands on TVXQ's R&B sound. Assisted by snapping pop percussion, Snow White's instrumentation is memorable.

Of course, all of this would be for nothing if Snow White did not build a clear atmosphere for itself. Within a few seconds of opening, it is clear Snow White is a successor to Yunho's fantastic City Lights, a personal favorite of mine. While the song never reaches the same heights as that track, TVXQ provide a fine performance, with the dreamy chorus particularly great, even if the post-chorus is laughably underwhelming with its heavily vocoder-ed hook of "Showy".

While it may not measure among their classics, Like Snow White is a fun, funky track, perfect to assist TVXQ's new album. It is a great track, and one of the album's very best.
