Epitaph Album Review: TVXQ! - MAHOROBA

Epitaph | Like Snow White Small Talk | Mahoroba | Storm Chaser | Light My Moon Like This

Before I talk about MAHOROBA, I would like to quickly talk a little bit about TVXQ's previous single, Small Talk, which occurs between Like Snow White and this track on the album. I had reviewed it back when it was released in 2020 (link at the top), hence why it did not receive a review today. However, the song has improved with age and would like now receive an 8.75.

I wish MAHOROBA was as good, though. In fact, it probably is one of the weakest songs on the album. The production is very modern, reminiscent of future bass and trap-pop. This is somewhat new for TVXQ, and the lack of a strong melody certainly does not help.

As with all of the other tracks on the album, MAHOROBA succeeds in the atmosphere. While its melody is forgettable, and the vocal performance forced, the chorus earnestly is quite fun, with the final chorus providing a classic Changmin high-note. Even the psycho hok is somewhat fun

While probably the weakest track on the album, MAHOROBA is fun, mid-tier idol-pop fluff. Thankfully, TVXQ improve themselves on later tracks in the album.
