Review: ONEWE - Universe
Last year, ONEWE provided us with two fantastic tracks in Rain to Be and Veronica. To head their new Planet Nine release, ONEWE have released single Universe. Universe is surprisingly effective in its art, slow melodic healing.
Indeed, Universe is beautiful, like a great K-Drama OST of yesterday. While unambitious, the sheer melody more than works. If ONEWE have succeeded in two things since their debut, it is building beauty, along with strong melodies. Universe thrives on both these elements. For one thing, the melody is nostalgic and dreamy. Like a falling star, it floats, before calmly landing. Every element of this melody feels calm but is written with enough effort that it floats, and never sinks.
ONEWE, as a band, largely focus on their fantastic instrumental skills. Universe shows them expand their productional beauty. Strings, pianos, guitars, and drums, all are layered over one another, leave the listener near tears with their healing power. With everything, music, lyrics, and vocals, working together, Universe dreams in the hope of each of these instruments.
ONEWE has a fantastic vocalist in Younghoon, and his dreamy timbre is a perfect pairing with the equally hopeful instrumental. It is utterly fantastic, hopeful, and, as I have said before this review, dreamy. It is a strong opening to the year, and a song that will likely age well.
nostalgic and dreamy really does describe them well in general.
