Review: Billkin - IXO
Small confession: As much as I love Asian dramas, I usually watch those from the late 2000s or early 2010s for East Asia, the 90s for South Asia, and almost never for Southeast Asia. Thus, while Billkin was becoming a hot topic, I remained unmoved, not even knowing he existed.
Then, he released a song, and now he has my attention. IXO is fun and funky, pulling off together as a brassy piece. Now, this has obviously got me interested, thus the review. The instrumental is really where this song is at. It is old-school brassy funk. It is not exactly unique, but it pops with just enough energy to come to life.
Sure thing, a good portion of the instrumentation is synthesized and sampled, but it is just good enough that I won't complain too much.
Billkin provides a strong performance. The chorus is about an octave or so too high, but it comes off as a strong falsetto, even if a bit strained. The chorus's breezy instrumental and flute sample certainly do help to bring the tune to life.
The verses are certainly better pitched, popping with a bit heavier energy. Nonetheless, the productional flourishes, from funk beats, rhythm, guitars, flying strings, and of course, the swaying brass samples all come together surprisingly well.
When it is all said and done, IXO is surprisingly solid. T-Pop has been on a role for the last two or so months, with Love Has Two People, 2Cool2Care, and now this. I cannot wait to see where the genre goes next.
