Review: 2PM - Make It

Review: 2PM - Make It

Yes, this song came out last month. But I am a bit of a 2PM fan, and the song is good. Thus, a review was incoming from the song's announcement.

2PM have finally returned from their military hiatus with a comeback. I think they might be only the 6th idol group to do so. More than anything, this shows not only 2PM's longevity, it shows the temporariness of idol groups. Many are built for momentary fame. 2PM now have lasted for about 13 years, an incredible fact to say the least. Part of their longevity is their tongue-in-cheek charm, with their fun personalities and music.

Make It is very much a 2PM song. Most of the charm comes from the hillarious MV. One of the oldest MV tropes is "Guy chases girl on street until she likes him". It initially used to be used in limit for fun, but always was creepy and stalker-esque, unless the girl is clearly into it from moment one. Thankfully, recent MV directors have been switching the trope on its head. Taeyeon, Chanmina, and karma absolutely torture the chasing guy in #GirlsSpkOut till you actually feel for the guy a bit, even if he is a total jerk. Make It goes the other way. The world is quite literally the present situation in an apocolypse, and 2PM is certainly not going to give up chasing after the girl. It makes a hillarious watch, and the guys are totally into the acting.

Musically, Make It is jazzy and fun. The piano is flirty and fun, while the brass adds a level of 'chill'.  Some synths and backbeats add a feeling similar to old early 2000s pop. The chorus starts with the slink-back trick used so often since Wanna One's Energetic. But since the song does not have much building back to do, the trick works like an absolute charm.

Lyrically, Make It sounds a bit stalker-ish. But I think that is on purpose. The song is tongue-in-cheek. That is important to know.

Overall, I am just glad 2PM are back. JYP is at the top of his producing game, and this song is fun.
