Review: From20 - From20

Review: From20 - From20

Oftentimes, K-Pop idol groups rarely last, often disbanding without ever reaching success due to terrible agency management. One such group was Bigstar, the leading male group of Brave Entertainment, often paired with Brave Girls. Brave Girls's story is one with some real lows, but they eventually, ehem-ehem, Rolled their way up. On the other hand, Bigstar faded away, despite their fun Block B meets Teen Top sound.

Now, vocalist Raehwan has made his solo debut as From20. It was actually released a few months ago, and thus is ineligible for this month's countdown, but I thought I should review it nonetheless. From20 is driven by its lo-fi, hopeful funky sound. The center of this is the chorus, with the central refrain retro yet modern and hopeful. It feels distinctly indie, with its subtle and filtered vocals.

Musically, it is driven by its lo-fi rock beats. The chords are simple and could be played by basically anyone, but this simplicity allows for great breathing room. The song fully comes into its own with the rock riff in the bridge, driving the song home.

Lyrically, From20 is a song about recovering and hope. Conceptually, it is great, even if some of the English lines do feel awkward. Overall, if Raehwan aims for the indie market, he could eventually achieve strong success. I just hope he continues to build on this sound.
