Review: Shreya Ghoshal & Soumyadeep Ghoshal - Angana Morey

I've often ranted about how trendy the Hindi music industry has become, and how it has thus lost its heart. Well clearly, the Ghoshal siblings clearly heard my complaints, as though not perfect, Angana Morey is the biggest step in the right direction since, like forever.

Let us start with the big deal, the instrumentation is recognizably Indian. Tablas, Indian flutes, and other traditional Indian instruments make a return. Of course, this is partially an electronic song, and the guitar and keyboard sound off I feel this might be a mixing problem, and it holds the song back from near-perfection.

Thankfully, Shreya Ghoshal gives a spirited vocal performance. Shreya Ghoshal is undoubtedly one of the strongest active Indian vocalists, and somewhat of a successor to the legendary Lata Mangeshkar, even if she probably will never reach that legend's level. A weaker vocalist would ruin this, but she supports and strengthens the material.

It is pretty clear this song is taking inspiration from the golden era of Indian music, but I feel a better producer, such as an R.D. Burman would make something like this a modern classic, and an instant 9.5 or 9.75. Despite this, Soumyadeep definitely is trying fusion as a goal here, and credit to him for that.

The chorus is a little too electronic for the song to fully reach its massive heights. Despite this, Angana Morey is clearly a massive step in the right direction, and a song I will probably come back to several times.
