Review: Spyair - Wadachi
Usually, when an anime ends, there are several celebrations and high hype. I do not watch anime, but the hype for Gintama's end has reached my ears. For the OST title theme, long-time collaborators Spyair have been brought in.
I am really new to Spyair's discography, but if Wadachi is how their signature sound is, count me in their fandom.
Lyrically, Wadachi is about memories, hope, happiness, and togetherness. This could turn into a preach-a-thon. But through keeping things simple, the song turns into a nostalgic smile, and easily the best lyrics this year so far.
This happiness through memories and rise-to-succeed empowerment anthem lyrics translates greatly with the instrumental. Chugging forward with guitars and strings, it sounds like an upbeat version of Offical Hige Dandism's incredible Laughter. And I hope you all know how much I love it. Meanwhile, the chugging tempo is from Sexy Zone's Run. I just compared it to two of 2020's best songs, so you know that this will be good.
The opening few seconds are driven by melodic rock, more Higedan than Miyavi. I like both, though this is a great example of this melodic rock.
Then enter Ike's vocals. They are uplifting and hopeful. It sounds like someone who has suffered a lot but finally came above the suffering to smile and succeed. It is uplifting and hopeful, filled with tears. Due to the past's loss and the current victory. It feels like a journey, and that is good.
Then comes the chorus, like the breaking of a long-suppressed dam. Like the joy of victory after the death of failure. It is filled with hooks, each guaranteeing to comfort you and put a smile on your face. The violins are another great touch.
The second verse follows the same structure as the first, just with the drums and guitar becoming more prominent. I find it interesting the song builds on from here as well, for many songwriters would call a peak. The instrumentation slowly gets stronger, and the emotion is even stronger than ever before. It feels like the building of an army of smiles, slowly marching out to battle to defeat sadness.
The bridge is urgent in its movement, moving forward in battle. The strings surge here, while Ike's vocals get more and more fierce. This is followed by a short but epic rock riff with violins assisting.
This all culminates in an epic final chorus, driving in epicness and intensity. As a whole, Wadachi is a fantastic single, though I wish they did extend it by a minute. This is my one and only gripe with the track.
While the year just started, topping Wadachi will be hard.
Wadachi is getting a 92 TrackScore this year. Wow, that is high praise. Easily 2021's best single.
ReplyDeleteI would add so far to that sentence. Hopefully we get more even better songs soon!
