Review: Shawn Mendes - Wonder
Last year, Shawn Mendes released his biggest hit ever with his collaboration with his girlfriend Camila Cabello in 'Senorita'. The track was arguably the biggest hit of 2019, and while it was catchy, it did not last too long for me. Meanwhile, 'Wonder' is arguably going to continue the longevity, but is much more impressive.
Adult Contemporary has been having a comeback this year. We have radio-friendly coming back every other week. Wonder is another song of this style, but it is a good example of 2020 radio pop.
The song is initially too simple for its own good, the chorus feels too one-note and the verses are too simple. But on every single repetition, the emotion and energy feel amplified. The simple production works surprisingly well with Shawn's vocal tone.
We then reach a brilliant version of the chorus with double the intensity. And to close the deal nicely we reach an emotional coda. At around 3 minutes, Wonder does not overstay its welcome and makes you want to come back to it time and time again simply just for the finale.
