Review: Susan Darvishi - Skip to the End

Review: Susan Darvishi - Skip to the End

Sometimes I wonder why I enjoy Susan Darvishi's music so much. I don't enjoy many of her inspirations, such as Ed Sheeran. I think it is the same reason so many people enjoy Taylor Swift's music; she is a good storyteller. Songs from 14th and 4th such as New Salvation, Polaroid, and Fingers Crossed all tell stories in a strong fashion, stories we all can relate to.

Skip to the End is her latest song, and I think it shows Darvishi's slow commercial growth. The MV views are already in the tens of thousands, and the MV was clearly professionally directed and is genuinely surprisingly good. Anyway, Skip to the End is much more generic than a lot of the electronic-influenced songs from 14th and 4th, with a nice, guitar-strummed soundscape.

Skip to the End's melody is like comfort food. It is not challenging, but it is instantly refreshing, and likely will stick around for quite some time. While the lack of a proper pre-chorus hurt the song, I love the chorus and its various refrains. The hooks were quite catchy, leading to a finale layering up various elements from throughout the song, quite satisfying!

As usual, Darvishi pulls through as the heart of her song. She is a strong vocalist but thrives as a lyricist. Skip to the End isn't deep, it is just pure fun, and Darvishi channels that through her writing of a dreamy, made-up, romance, it is joyful and quite endearing.

Skip to the End is not Darvishi's best song, but it is a great song. I expect it to stick awhile, and slowly grow even more on me.

  1. I was hoping to see you review this song given how you were the one who introduced Susan's songs!
Super pleasant song so I enjoy this. Excited to see more songs by her :)

This is a general question: What is it you don't like about Ed Sheeran's music?

    1. I am glad someone remembered Susan Darvishi, her music really is fantastic, and I love the fact that she has a slowly growing audience.

For Ed Sheeran, his "Guy with a Guitar" persona really could not survive his meteoric rise to fame. He really is kind of overhated by the musical scene, but his music is really too generic to make into real A+ highlights. Songs like Thinking Out Loud and Bad Habits are not terrible though. My favorite Ed Sheeran song, actually sounds nothing like Ed Sheeran. "You Need Me I Don't Need You" is a fantastic funky '90s hip-hop tune with some A-grade production. Seriously, it is one of the most underrated highlights by a major singer in recent memory.

    2. (edited because my 1st one came off as unintentionally rude)

Ohh I see. Thanks for answering my question!
To be honest I thought part of why people (in general) hate him was because of his participation in BTS' 'Permission to Dance'. That and a combination of ethnicity differences + unconscious bias + popularity. Especially when that song isn't liked by a lot of people compared to the other commercialised Western BTS songs (Dynamite and Butter). Of course that's just one side of the story.

I've only heard of Ed Sheeran's popular ones, 'Castle on the Hill' being my favourite.
Well, maybe not because 'You Need Me, I Don't Need You' is such a banger??? The percussion is just, yes. Thanks for bringing that song to my attention!

    3. I mean, folks did not really like Ed Sheeran's K-Pop pieces, but I do think that was due to his already mixed reputation in the western pop sphere. Caste on the Hill is probably one of his best recent songs, I love how personal it is. But yeah, glad you love You Need Me I Don't Need You, such an underrated highlight!
