Review: H1-KEY - Heart Light
H1-KEY is just a rookie group but has already been through a lot in their few months of existence. The girl group's debut single Athletic Girl (still their best song) played off three chorus phases in a mix-and-match format and overcame the song's hilarious cringe-inducing lyrics. The group also has gotten into hot water due to rapper Sitala's controversial pro-military stance on Thai politics, which ended in her getting kicked out of the group. Now with a new member, H1-KEY is back with a new summer maxi-single. I really don't have much to say on the lead single, but b-side Heart Light has some fantastic, second-generation stadium pop energy, and thus this review.
Nothing in Heart Light is surprising or unique, it is EDM-inspired pop at its most basic, build to a massive anthemic drop with a repeated refrain. Its execution is not anything particularly special either, basically playing to all the numbers. It is just that as of late, there hasn't been much new Asian music worth sharing, and Heart Light is just the right mix of nostalgic and anthemic.
I love the little guitar strumming through the verses, it reminds me of one of the best rock-EDM songs in recent memories, TRASH's Love. Both songs have similar structures, but I feel TRASH embodied its song with more emotion. Nonetheless, Heart Light does some quite right, particularly the synths in the chorus, and the entirety of the pre-chorus. All these elements come together to form something surprisingly fun.
It is hard to know H1-KEY's future, but there is certainly potential for the group. They provide a spirited vocal performance that works well in cohesion. While it is hard to know what the future holds for the group, they certainly can provide some gems if things go the members' way.
