October Mini Song Reviews
October was a busy month for me, and I did not get to review as many tracks as I wanted. Thus, this is a lucky month for the mini song reviews. Due to the Gayo Music Festival, I found several indie titles, while I also have several major releases left to review. Thus, I had to split the roundup into two.
Lotus Kay - Rule the World
I got recommended this track by a spam comment, and I gave it a mini-review! The mixing here is quite terrible, and it nearly derails the entire song, despite the melody actually being quite good. The instrumentation is good, but some vocal processing could better meld it into the track.
Rating: 7/10
Jue - Lucid Dream
A '90s-inspired R&B mid-tempo, Lucid Dream is another indie gem released this month. The instrumental pops, with the production loop being nothing short of exciting. Jue's voice is perfect for the song, guiding the popping instrument with a level-headed expression of emotion.
I wish the chorus popped a little more, with perhaps a stronger hook. Nonetheless, as it stands, Lucid Dream needs more attention.
Rating: 8.75/10
bugAboo - bugAboo
Agency-head and producer Ryan Jhun is certainly a controversial figure, and for good reason. He gave some terribly demeaning comments to women earlier this year, Unfortunately, he is as much of a musical genius as an absolute jerk. BugAboo's debut is an utter jam, relying on the cutesy aegyo soundscape, without ever resorting to a grating vocal style.
Minus, the pre-chorus, which cleverly slows the melody down, BugAboo is an addictive dance gem, with the brassy elements and western themes being a highlight. Of course, the violin running havoc in the post-chorus is the icing on the cake.
