Review: Aryon Jones - Supercharged
Among the new generation of American rockers, Aryon Jones has been one of the many to impress me. Earlier this year, he released Mercy, which was solid. I missed reviewing it, and thus, I am compensating with a review of Supercharged.
Supercharged is a modern reimagining of classic rock-and-roll. Indeed, it does not take one to be trained in music history to notice the influence. The rock beat is strong, particularly in the chorus.
The chorus matches the grit of rock with a good, fun, melody. Aryon provides a truly strong performance, playing with the song's energy. Sometimes riding the melody, sometimes, mastering it. The end result is inconsistency, but just enough fun for it to work.
The true centerpiece of Supercharged is its blitzing, ever-attacking, instrumental. It does not do much but does what is needed from it. It is fun as expected, but thrives with its simple guitar-on-drums arrangement. It occasional shifts, but never enough to harm the central experience.
Supercharged is not perfect. The lyrics are much weaker than Mercy (they do not even make much sense), and the tune is not much different from many better songs from times now gone.
Nonetheless, Supercharged is a fun track that succeeds in its aim. Perfection is not always possible, but fun does the trick at times.
