Review: UP10TION - Spin Off

Review: UP10TION - Spin Off

UP10TION have suffered from terrible management of their break-out moments. They did great in Produce X 101, and Top Media made the stand-out members soloists. When they had a long list of acclaimed songs, Top Media made them switch styles. In a way, being a fan of UP10TION is hard, which is probably why they have still gone unnoticed, even becoming less popular over time.

For those waiting for UP10TION to finally release a standout, Spin Off most likely won't be that, unless you like the electronic funk genre. The verses have some fun moments, even if the pre-chorus does not work. It plays off like typical K-Pop. The second verse opens with a cleverly inserted trap rap but extends it for too long for it to be effective, driving it into the ground. At least it makes me better appreciate the rest of the verse.

The central refrain is unbalanced, with the hooks being a little too short to fully appreciate, even if I can appreciate the tempo and speed. The electronic synths are very IZ*ONE-esque, even if it comes off as fun at times. The members' performance works here, even if the song does not.

Thankfully, for once this month, the bridge actually works on building, and the final chorus comes off as really strong, with some great instrumental variations, courtesy of the guitar. Unfortunately, this is undercut by the final seconds being under a trap beat.

Overall, Spin Off is fine. If you enjoy this sound, you'll like it. Otherwise, you might want to skip it in the playlist.

  1. Same for me. I appreciate it but it's not my thing even though it had the potential to be. Glad to have them back, though.

  2. Very great! UP10TION has some of the best songs in their career: Candyland (which I really remember back in 2018 it was fun), also So Beautiful and Blue Rose. I mean come on TOP Media really wasted the group's potential.

Anyway, I really like this sound. However, the rap section is what made me reconsider. It just makes the song so chaotic and loses all the momentum it acquired in that chorus. Trap really destroys songs.

    1. Sorry for the late reply. The last two days have been crazy for me.

Yeah, UP10TION have some amazing songs. Going Crazy, So Dangerous, and Tonight are all favorites of mine.

I think that PHLOXINVAR created a remix without the rap. It eases listening quite a bit.
