Review: Produce 101 Japan S2 - Shadow (Slip Inside)

Review: Produce 101 Japan S2 - Shadow (Slip Inside)

The Produce franchise was derailed in Korea when it was revealed that basically the whole thing was rigged. Since then, Produce has moved to China (where the CCP stopped the reality TV shows basically), and now to Japan, where it is not enjoying decent success, and definitely is not rigged.

That said, the music for the concept round overall has been solid. Another Day is solid, but Shadow (Slip Inside) gets the review simply due to how electronic and fun it is. Shadow is produced by a part of the e.one K-Pop production team, and as any fan of EXO's Lucky will tell you, they can do funk.

The real center of Shadow is its chorus, with a frictioning groove. It makes the 'slide' statement feel true, with the airy vocals creating an excellent atmosphere, the disco strings stand as the icing on the cake. The electro bass at the center of it all is fantastic, with just that right amount of pizazz and grit.

Unfortunately, the verses end up being a little generic at times. The beat is solid, but the melody is a bit lacking. The bridge, once again, is weak, with the trap segment being shoved in right there. As a long-time fan of bridges being the center of songs melodically, emotionally, and sonically, the recent state of bridges has been disappointing, especially after the amazing bridges in 2020. Thankfully, it leads to an excellent climax here, with the EDM beat going full-on early 2010s.

I honestly don't care too much about the Produce franchise, but Slip Inside is a solid song, and I may come back to it later when I have the time.
