Review: Coldplay - Higher Power

Review: Coldplay - Higher Power

Coldplay are currently building towards their 9th studio album. Pre-release single Higher Power was initially released last month but only got the futuristic MV this month. It is a successor to the 80's futuristic sound, with an MV which seems like Cyberpunk 2077 meets the underground of Coruscant from Star Wars. For how engaging the visuals for the MV are, the song is surprisingly simple.

The chorus drives the song, almost to the point that the central "You've got a, higher power" refrain becomes annoying after a single listen.  It is performed strongly, but it is repeated so often it grows tiring. It is supported by some retro synths, which are much more engaging.

Sometimes, these synths go for rhythms more often seen in Eastern music, and it really adds a level of detail making the song more engaging. The verses use the synths as a building ground, even if they don't fully work. It is overall fun, and that is what matters most of the time.

There is not a shift for the bridge or the final chorus. It at least creates a sense of familiarity, with the final refrain adding just a bit more retro oomph to make the song more engaging. While pretty straightforward, Higher Power is certainly an enjoyable listen.

    1. Sorry for the late reply. Crazy day or two lol.

Yeah, very Coldplay. Writing music is fun. I have written a few pieces (though never published them). Sometimes, it is best when you just sit down and play, and then a song slowly unveils itself.
