Review: Taeho (IMFACT) - GGOMA Ft. Choi Yegeun
Commercial success still evades IMFACT, but they had an excellent mini-album in 2020. Title track Lie received acclaim, and its b-side Lalida is a personal favorite of mine. Now, main vocalist Taeho finally makes his solo debut, with a song which is basically a duet with indie star Yegeun. The result is an old school jazz track with a whole lot of vocal prowess.
On first listen alone, it was obvious that neither Taeho or Yegeun could handle this track on their own. That is not an insult, both are capable vocalists. The issue is this song thrives on momentum, and sticking to one vocalist could ruin the flow. Instead, both vocalists now get to play off each other, leading to great dynamism.
The production assists this a lot. It sounds like it is ripped straight from the 50's, and succeeds in this greatly. The riff right after the chorus is a great example of this. Similar to Barbara Pravi's Voila, the tempo actually speeds up throughout the song, though in a lot more of a joyous fashion this time.
Pianos, drums, and the brass drives the instrumental. But the backing vocals have a large effect on the song. The vocals are what this song is about, and it all culminates in probably the best (and maybe the only?) scat segment this year. I am a big fan of scar, it truly can bring a song to life. And that is what GGOMA seems to be, it is full of life. The key change is more evidence of this.
GGOMA could have been assisted by a more robust melody, but I feel like it will last long on my playlist. This type of pleasant jazz needs to appear more.
