Review: Gjon's Tears - Tout L'Universe
Swiss artist Gjon's Tears was set to take part in last year's canceled Eurovision. Thus, it was not too surprising to see him once again enter the competition. Tout L'Universe by him is currently considered a favorite to succeed in the competition.
This French-language single is a dramatic ballad. It plays all of the classic power ballad tricks. It just so happens I love a good power ballad, and thus, I am instantly interested. And like any good ballad, it builds to several crescendos, each filled with power.
Each time the chorus comes on, it feels massive, even compared to the last. This is probably due to the ever-tensing instrumental. Each time the chorus hits, the production expands further, building on dramatic orchestration. Of course, Gjon's Tears's voice (he is a person) drives this. Although it is overtly high-pitched, it contrasts well with the dark instrumentation.
If I had one wish for the song, it would be that the verses were more fleshed out, and better bridged with the chorus. They are powerful in their own right, but can't compete with the masterful chorus. And I don't use the word masterful lightly. This simple melody is one of the best in pop this year.
