Atlantis Album Review: SHINee - Days and Years
SHINee have added a few b-sides to their re-package album, which I will be reviewing.
From the looks of it, Days and Years may have been written with SHINee's upcoming military hiatus in mind, as Taemin leaves for enlistment soon. I find it interesting that Atlantis is such a joyous affair, while the b-sides are sadder, relying on lo-fi charms.
Normally, I would find songs like Days and Years somewhat underwhelming, but this where SHINee's vocals come in. The vocal layering is joyous. My favorite part is the pre-chorus, which has an incredible harmony between Onew and Key at one point. Taemin singing across the chorus near the end is also incredible. This is what a strong vocal arrangement can do to a good song, it makes it great.
The lyrics also are solid, continuing a trend in the repackage. And even if the chorus fails to live up to the verses' build-up, it still is something incredible.
If this is SHINee's last song for a few years, it certainly is an excellent conclusion. Even without that sentimental value, though, it is a really solid b-side, and would be an incredible single for any other group. This is what SHINee are excellent at.
