Review: Wang Kai & Zhou Shen - Harmony of Light and Dust
China has slowly cultivated an incredible list of singers. Zhou Shen is one of the luminaries on that list. I just find that all of their talents are limited by their opportunities for global success. The poorly, google translated Harmony of Light and Dust may or may not be a remake (a lot of live C-Pop songs are remakes), but I love it.
At first glance, Wang Kai and Zhou Shen are a weird choice for a duet. Wang Kai is more of an actor than a singer, and an incredible actor at that (see: Nirvana in Fire). But when he sings, he has a low baritone voice. On the other end, Zhou Shen thrives on his high and slightly feminine falsetto skills.
Thankfully, this is why they thrive together. By trading lines, they keep us on our toes. The simple piano and ad-libs provide more than enough atmosphere.
The song's golden moment comes in the chorus. The voices provide the perfect contrast. Zhou Shen takes the lead, and Wang Kai lets that happen, creating a great effect. My favorite part is when each of them sings a different melody, creating a heavenly feel.
I miss the era of simple, yet emotional, Chinese love ballads. This new collaboration takes me back to those times, and boy am I glad.
I may not come back to it too much, and thus the non-9+ score. But make no mistake, this is a ballad worth your time. In fact, I debated big time for the score, and it may jump any time.
Indeed! Everybody should be taking notes and listening to Mr. Zhou Shen and Wang Kai with this one. They really nailed it.
