Review: Pentagon - Do or Not
Pentagon is slowly entering its military hiatus career section. Leader, producer, main vocalist, and songwriter Hui has entered the military. Hui is basically the backbone of Pentagon's sound, and the group certainly will sound a lot different without him. Do or Not is his final single song before the hiatus, and is his best production since 2019.
Opening with a classic Doo-wop section, we get to see the group's excellent vocals before the rest of the song starts.
The rest of the song sounds like a teen musical meets a Twice song with strong rock elements. Most notably, it sounds like the theme song of a classic love K-Drama of lore. I love its theatricality.
Lyrically, it is a song of not caring if the person Pentagon is loving loves them. For if not, they will move on and have fun. Simple themes, but Pentagon add just enough cues to make it seem like extreme sadness masked in happiness. Now you can choose your interpretation, and I think that is the point.
The real reason such an old-style song like or Do or Not thrives is because it knows what it wants to do. Plus, Pentagon's vocals are on spot. Hui is a great producer, and he knows his group's strength.
Arguably, the song's strongest moment is when all the song's elements lead to the chorus. And that chorus really stands out due to Hui's amazing vocals (honorable mention to Kino), who really sounds like he could have been born to sing Rockabilly or Rock and Roll. His rocky voice is something I love. I mean, he is an amazing vocalist. It will be hard waiting for his comeback from the military.
