Review: GHOST9 - Seoul
GHOST9 have slowly gained a fandom for their theatrical sci-fi sound. Their December single W.ALL ended up growing on me, even if it was a tad bit. Now they come back with Seoul, which amplifies the good and bad of W.ALL to an astronomical degree.
Conceptually, Seoul is about, er, the city of Seoul. For those looking for a social commentary track.
Let's talk about the good first, the theatrical concept is epic. This all leads to the epic chorus, which is easily the best moment in GHOST9's small discography so far. The backing vocals create harmony, while the instrumentation is forever growing.
Now that the good is out of the way, the messy verses are our focus. The sledgehammer instrumentation is good in some places, but it fails to do much. The hooks and raps are also way out of whack, creating a hellish and unfortunate feel, which does not support the chorus in any way.
This leaves us with two pieces of two very, very different songs. Each deserves a total different rating, making this a difficult song to grade. In the end, the good out does of bad, but the song does feel like wasted potential.
I need them to tone down the rapping sections cause so far I haven't liked any of them, always the vocals parts being the ones to save the day.
