Golden Era Bollywood Review: Hemant Kumar - Hai Apna Dil To Awara (My Heart is a Vagabond)

Hemant Kumar might eventually be known as the unsung gem of the Golden Era. During his time, he was arguably one of the most popular singers, but while his songs remain hits, he has not enjoyed recognition in the current public eye like Rafi or Kishore Kumar.

If there is one iconic hit from him that remains a moment in Indian music, it would be Hai Apna Dil To Awara. Produced by S.D. Burman, all his classic moves are here. Guitars, high drum beats, and harmonica riffs (performed by his song, and future musical legend, R.D. Burman). The basic melody is part of why this song is so good, you really can't go wrong with it. Of course, the absolutely enthralling harmonica beat, and the background claps helps add a lot.

You can see how modern songwriters and producers would 'polish this'. They'd increase the mixing, and smooth out Hemant Kumar's voice. Instead, Hemant's slightly scruffy voice stands out in all its glory. He adds a sort-of flirty and fun "What do I do?" feel (probably with a smiley emoji if written in modern times).

Back to the harmonica, the riff is just bound to get stuck in your head. It is exactly my second favorite harmonica usage from R.D. Burman (Mere Sapno ki Rani takes first). It is just incredible, the whole song is, really.
