Top 10 Infinite Songs

Top 10 Infinite Songs

In late 2019, I drafted a potential 'Top 50 K-Pop songs of the 2010s' list. While it certainly missed several classics, and the order was messy, it gave me a good idea of the great artists of the decade. Kara and TVXQ had 4 songs each in the top 50, and so did Infinite. But Infinite's songs were all at higher spots, and they are perhaps the greatest artists of the 2010s. The top 8 are all 10/10 songs, and their discography stands as one of K-Pop's best.

10. Bad (2015)

Not really a classic-style Infinite song, it still is great. Ignoring the "Oh my I love this song" intro line, this song is basically the ultimate orchestral hip-hop song of the last 10 years. The vocals blend with the strings to make a massive Infinite single.

9. Nothing's Over (2011)

While not half as legendary as the songs above, Nothing's Over stands as one of the most comforting K-Pop songs. It stands as the bridge between rookies Infinite, and legends Infinite. It also has the group's best key change (with the exception of the number one song).

8. Be Mine (2011)

As far as iconic-ness goes, Be Mine is Infinite's most iconic song, and one of the most iconic Korean songs from 2011. To me, it is the moment they finally got their act together, and we saw the Infinite considered K-Pop's greatest act of the 2010s for the first time. Though it was not their first, nor best, peak, it stands as an imposing moment in their discography.

7. Man in Love (2013)

Easily the closest Infinite has come to being 'cute', they do this with their own style. It is polished, with an overpowering instrumental, Woohyun and Sungkyu provide an engaging vocal performance, while the key change makes things even better.

6. Back (2014)

Expectations were mixed for this comeback, as regular and consistent producer Sweetune was let go for in-house duo Rphabet (BLSSD and Razer). In the end, the song starting as an aimless ballad increased fears. I think we all, though, remember the moment when we first heard the chorus hit, though. An emotional roller-coaster, make no mistake, Back is still Infinite at their peak.

5. Last Romeo (2014)

The brass and jazz instrumental blasts through the song. The opening moment is one of 2014's best musical moments ever, while the ever-active tempo helps build. Last Romeo feels like a group operating at its peak, and that is what it is. In the end, it is a satisfying conclusion to the Sweetune-produced Infinite singles run.

4. Wind (2018)

It feels somewhat ironic that Wind was never made an Infinite single, as it is better than most singles from the group. It stands as their b-side peak and their best song since 2012. BLSSD and Razer add Sweetune elements to their classic sound, while the members provide weight to the breezy instrumental. The lyrics portray hope for the future, while sadness for the present for a relationship. A classic Infinite lyrical theme. The chorus might be one of the group's best.

3. Before the Dawn (BTD) (2011)

As an inspirit since the group's debut, BTD was my favorite song from them for a long time. It is one of their darkest songs, from an age where songs went viral due to how good they were. An inverted take on the classic 'chase for success' theme. This song has aged amazingly.

Sungjong's hair, nope.

2. Paradise (2011)

Often times, Infinite is given slack for not going fully deep in their lyrics. Paradise was their first song after their commercial breakthrough, and it is perhaps their most experimental. The lyrics are an interesting take on the obsessive relationship idea, while the members give their all. Kudos to Sweetune, whose fantastic instrumental made this song so great. Not all groups can do this falsetto chorus even in their dreams, but Infinite does it and bring emotion along with them.

1. The Chaser (2012)

Big surprise. I know, this tops like everyone's' Infinite top lists, but it is so deserved. The traditional Korean instrumentation, blending with the synth-wave elements makes a massive single. With the Korean lyrics and the epic performance, this is easily one of the best K-Pop songs ever. Sungkyu and Woohyun are at the top of their game here, culminating in an epic key change. There is a reason this song is so acclaimed, it is near perfect.

  1. [sits comfortably and pours herself some tea]: let's get into this

Last Romeo is probably one of my favourite INFINITE songs and it's one of those songs that just put me in a good mood (alongside Man In Love). Are the lyrics cheesy? Yes. Do I care? Nope. [dance break]

Paradise and The Chaser at top 2... my inner Inspirit soul is satisfied with this very much. Starting to feel like no one will ever come close to releases like that. Or singing them live like them.

PS. I love Sungjong's noodle ponytail hair in BTD hahaha.

    1. I am so glad to hear some more Last Romeo appreciation. It is a great song deserving lots of love. Actually, the cheesy, old-school lyrics make it better for me!

I like that little comment about singing them live. Nowadays I feel like anyone can perform any modern K-Pop song. Back in the earlier days of K-Pop, the producer had to specialize a song for a group. Not every group can do Paradise's chorus, and that is why Sweetune chose it. Changmin has unique high-note skills, thus his skills are a basis for TVXQ songs.

  2. Well, I'll give you my surprise of the decade. I am currently compiling my Best K-Pop Songs of All-Time list. DREAMCATCHER, BTS, TVXQ, and INFINITE had the most entries in the Top 100 with at least 5. I was actually surprised at how DREAMCATCHER really impacted me unknowingly quiet. INFINITE has 3 songs in my Top 10, THAT IS HOW JUST AMAZING THEY ARE. My list is actually 70% complete.

I love this Top 10, INFINITE is the 2nd to only have this feature. Looking forward for more.

    1. Actually, I choose artists with more evident peaks. Mohamad Rafi may be one of my favorite singers of all time (top 5 or 10 easily), but he has so many songs, I doubt I can rank a fair top 10 (he has about 50,000 songs he recorded).

Dreamcatcher certainly seemed to have an impact on you, glad they did! Good luck with compiling the list, for I doubt I can compile mine with ease, too much good stuff!

Looking forward to your top 100! Based on your draft top 10, it will be good!

    1. Glad you liked the list!

As for variety, I am not really the most knowledgeable. I am more an inspirit for their music than anything else, and to be honest, I rarely watch group-specific variety. Even then, individual variety was in a different place back in the 2nd gen, and many companies were unwilling to invest in variety unless a group is a sure-fire hit. Run BTS changed the way individual variety was looked at.

Wikipedia has a list of all the reality shows Infinite had.

      Mnet You're My Oppa (2010)
Mnet Japan Days Of Infinite (2010)
      Mnet Sesame Player (2011)
KBS Birth Of A Family (2012)
      Mnet Ranking King (2012)
TrunQ Korea Infinite Busan Wish Travel (2012)
Mnet 10 Days In Japan Story (2013)
      Mnet This Is Infinite (2014)

I also searched some of those variety shows on YouTube, and found them. I have not watched any of them though.

    2. Here comes what I thought was my useless kpop knowledge! How the turntables.

INFINITE have been very regular on Weekly Idol if you like watching that, I'm pretty sure they've been on there every single year. The last one they did was during The Eye promotions though, if I'm not mistaken and it's a really funny one. Their episode on Knowing Bros is also great, I really enjoyed it.

However, I really think they are the funniest and most comfortable when conducting their own variety so I warmly recommend INFINITE Showtime! It's my go-to rewatch variety whenever I'm really sad and miss them haha. The variety was filmed while Hoya was still with them too. There is also Ranking King which is super old but I found it to be really fun, especially the episodes where they just keep betraying each other haha. I binged it in a day back in 2019. I'd definitely look into those two first, INFINITE have the similar energy as SHINee in the sense that they don't need anyone else to create a fun atmosphere for them - they do that on their own. (and everything is on YT, subbed ^^)
