Review: Youha - Abittipsy
Youha is one of the latest singer-songwriters from Korea. The reason I am so excited by her debut is within a few days, two of her songs were released. What I Said performed by Victon follows the swag hip-hop trend with its own style. Meanwhile, she releases an accessible retro song for herself in the Synthwave genre.
I personally feel Synthwave to be its own new thing, instead of just a tribute 80s act. Because face it, it is its own thing now.
Abittipsy is literally its title. The singer is supposed to be drunk when singing. Rather than the more drunk depression style that pops up every now and then, Abittipsy sounds and plays like a K-Drama drinking scene. What I mean is it is light overacted cute fun-ness without any emotional stakes. Now Youha knows this can wear out quickly, and thus the song is short.
Abittipsy follows a simple chord progression without ever differing, making it an easy listen. I guess that is the point, it is a feel-good song. In fact, it is good for some "Keep the mind quiet" fun. The chorus especially has some great hooks.
To be fair, the bridge and onwards of the song is a true gem. The high-note is pretty great, showing Youha can be a deadly vocalist if she wants to (of course, if you heard Island, you would know that). Afterward, the "Nanana" hook (how many K-Pop songs have this hook?), the song comes to its fun conclusion.
Instead of challenging you, Abittipsy is silly fun, and knows it wants to be that, thus succeeding. Seeing the diversity of her production discography, I am curious to see where Youha goes next.
Yes indeed it was just well-rounded, well-produced song. It was like American pop but really elevated in how it was delivered.
ReplyDeleteIt was also produced by French DJs named Jeremy Lecarour and Amo Cost, a weird Rodolphe Lejeune working in the Comedy/Spoken Word genre and Ryan S. Jhun of course.
By this point, Ryan S Jhun's name is everywhere. The reason I mentioned Youha was because she is also the singer.
DeleteI did not realize the American pop similarities till now, but you are so right :)
