Imaginary Album Review: Miyavi - Are You With Me?

Imaginary Album Review: Miyavi - Are You With Me?

After I Swear, the album continues down its more upbeat and poppier sound. This could go both ways, both being amazing, or utterly underwhelming.

Enter Are You With Me? Compared to the aggressive and futuristic earlier tracks on the albums, Are You With Me? is certainly a whole lot more generic. Indeed, it feels like any other J-Rock track from the last past 5 years, and it lacks that extra something to set it apart.

The central refrain is particularly fun, with a driven chant at its heart. Nonetheless, it has no grit for it to build on. This is certainly an issue, and it severely impacts the long-term impact of the song.

Normally, I hate a slow down for any song, but the post-chorus slowdown chant is by far the most effective trick in the song, other than the classic Miyavi rock riff, which is expected.

Little joyful electronic flourishes do make the song more interesting, even if only marginally. It all concludes in a little electronic coda, which pleasingly ends this little diversion on an otherwise epic album.
