Review: Mamamoo - Aya

My bad that I missed reviewing 'Dingga', but it would have gotten a flat 7.25 if I had reviewed it, just saying.

Mamamoo is a weird group for me. I have yet to love any of their singles, yet I do not hate any. Interesting thing; my favorite single of theirs is 'Starry Night', which has split the fandom into two. Some people like their new side, while others prefer their old side. I personally lean towards their new side (I know, that is more divisive than not).

Sampling a Brazillian song, 'Aya'-s verses do their best to sell the track to you, despite them being underwhelming till the pre-chorus. The exception is Moonbyul in the second verse. I just wish the group would be allowed to use their superb vocals.

I find the chorus, 'interesting'. I really like the flute in the first half, as it goes well with the Latin vibe. I just wish that it was followed by a vocal hook like that in 'Favorite Boys'. Instead, the song just floats around, willing to let its star power hold it up.

While I have seen praise for the climax, I just found it out of place. Maybe a high-note or two while the flute sample played may have helped, but alas it was not to be. Every further listen has reduced the track's score I am afraid to say.

Rating: 6.75/10

  1. I appreciate the artistic choice of MAMAMOO but they sacrificed the cohesion and the listen-ability for this. I am very very disappointed this week, 57 for AB6IX, 67 for MAMAMOO and now 74 for Park Jihoon. Very disjointing tracks...

    1. Tell me about it, at least Secret Number's new track (which I am writing a review on) is surprisingly good.

    2. Well yes I'm very much happy about it Secret Number is about 8.25 - 8.4 to me. Much much better than their debut, my criticism is the horns I don't like it, but that is just me.

    3. As of the moment MAMAMOO's TrackScore is 69. 85% of the critics have been counted. That might be the worst TrackScore rating since the creation.

    4. No idea what you mean by 'horns'. But, the score you got is correct.

Also, I am surprised the Mamamoo tracksore is so high, I would have guessed it to be like 6.25-6.5!

    5. I mean the horns are the trombones and the jazz wind instruments.

    6. Oh and why is it 69 it is because of the Melon ratings (88; very GP-friendly)

    7. Oh, then it makes sense. But am I the only person who enjoys jazz currently? Ya, Melon skewed the day again! Still, good your trackscore can give us a good idea of what the critics say :)

    1. Gi,

The song most people say it sampled is this one. Mostly due to the climax.

      I hope this helps :)
