Review: Miyavi - Futurism

Review: Miyavi - Futurism

Simply put, Miyavi is my favorite musical artist of the last past few years. He has been consistent in schedule and quality, with some epic guitar riffs, emotive melodies, and performance skills that rival the very best, it is no surprise he has garnered a small but devoted international fandom.

It may surprise many new listeners, but Miyavi has actually been releasing music since the late '90s, and is a rough contemporary (career-wise) of Yoshiki, Seo Taiji, Kurt Cobain, and many more. Despite this, his career has lasted much longer, and he still is only forty, with many more years as a performer left in him. 2022 is the 20th anniversary of his solo debut, and with his frequent release schedule this year (led by the incredible Strike It Out), along with an American tour and a move to a new label, it seems he is celebrating the anniversary, hopefully capping the year off with an album.

Futurism is his latest single and is earnestly one of the best songs in an utter sleeper of a month. Miyavi has slightly changed his musical styles for a more sinister and groovy rock sound as of late, and Futurism helps continue that, with a groovy chorus worth remembering. It rocks out with the best of them but is not as instantly memorable as Hush Hush, however, it still is a load of fun.

If there is one thing that makes Futurism worth it, it is the breakneck finale, exploding with an electronic riff that is both classic Miyavi and a whole lot more urgent, sounding like a jackhammer merging with a glitchy audio file. It is pure genius and will work excellently with a music video, and I can't wait to see it.

Futurism might not instantly be a Miyavi classic, but it is a whole lot of fun, and I expect it to age really well.
