Review: LAUSBUB - Solaris
Back when I started 10/10 - Music in late 2020, the aim was to provide my thoughts on mainstream Korean and Japanese idol pop. Nearly two years later, the idea behind the site has changed, to express my thought on whatever music has caught my attention. Today, it is the Japanese indie group LAUSBUB. The duo gained some fame last year after going viral as an experimental techno-pop group just in high school. Last month, they officially released their first single to little-to-no notoriety. I hope follow-up Solaris gets some love, as it is fantastic.
First, let us start with the ambiguous, chanted lyrics. Within the English lines, there are some clear grammatical errors. Nonetheless, there is clearly a conceptual idea behind each lyric, creating a hazy and ambiguous photograph, one of abandonment and discovery. This is shown through the quietly chanted singing, which works great with the concept.
The instrumentation also follows this ambient style. It purposefully goes off-beat several times but comes together for a central chorale refrain. It is quirky and weird, while still being eery and mysterious. If art is supposed to "Comfort the disturb, and disturb the comforted", Solaris is art. There is something ethereal within its sonic writing. There is something fantastic in how deep Solaris feels. It may not be the easiest listen, but it comes together fantastically.
