Review: Tove Lo - No One Dies From Love

Review: Tove Lo - No One Dies From Love

Tove Lo is a Swedish singer, known for her dark and introspective love lyrics, along with a healthy dose of pop within her releases. In a way, she reminds me of MARINA, a northern European pop star with a progressive fan base, a booming voice, and a love of pop music with heavy bass and '80s elements. Despite that, No One Dies From Love forms its own identity with uniquely '70s aesthetic and electronic elements.

I love that electronic synth omnipresent throughout the song, it melds perfectly with Tove's voice in the chorus, with one of the best use of vocal filters in recent memory. The song is aggressive but intensely melodic, partly due to the melody, which spirals and grows. When the chorus first hits, it is strong. However, by the final repetition, the instrumentation has grown to an overwhelming surge of emotions, expressing true heartbreak.

Perhaps one of the reasons the song feels so real is the introspective lyrics. "I tried my best with you, you claim the same. Somehow we're strangers who share this pain". From missing watching movies with her love to the impossibility of moving on, Tove provides her famous introspective lyrics on heartbreak. Tove also provides a solid performance, commanding her voice over the incredible instrumentation.

I could praise so many segments of the song. From the atmospheric opening of the song, the first verse with its touching synths, the song escalates, with an incredible chorus, bridge, and finale. In a way, No One Dies From Love is a song that one cannot jump into midway, it succeeds best in one full listen providing context to each and every textual piece within the song.

  2. Love this! I'm not familiar with Tove Lo, so I don't see the similarity with MARINA (yet!). Good song!

    1. Well, I was commenting more on attitude and styling. MARINA's most recent album also had a retro '50s-influenced style, and was performed with the sort of aggressiveness that you rarely see from any artists, hence the comparison.
