Review: Himang - Young

Review: Himang - Young

I currently have gone to check out indie artists, simply because it has been a really underwhelming month for the A-list artists. Most of the songs are middling, but thankfully there have been a few highlights.

One of those is Korean artist Himang's Young, which blends interesting musical choices with an interesting lyrical concept. Lyrically, Young is simply a reflection of youth. Easily my favorite line in the song is arguably the simplest, "I'm Young and I make mistakes". In a way, youth is such an interesting era of age, one could write poetry on it. But Himang keeps it simple, with lines like "I'm fluid I change" effectively telling the point without forcing the listener to pick up a dictionary.

Musically, the beat is simply a future R&B beat, with some electric guitar adding some dynamism. In the back, the keyboard helps sew these separate styles together.

Himang provides a matter-of-fact performance, remaining stable with journalistic stability through the whole piece. Some vocal variations, such as strong frustration or joy in segments would add another dimension, but this approach works nearly as well.

The K-Indie scene faced a down year in 2020, 2021 has been much better for it, and Young is certainly one of the better R&B tracks this year. While I won't likely hear it too much simply due to its obscurity (524 views at the time of writing), it will always be a positive listen whenever it comes in the shuffle.
