Review: Pink Fantasy - Poison

Review: Pink Fantasy - Poison

Since Dreamcatcher slowly but surely rose with their K-Pop meets metal sound, there have been a few copycats. Although Dreamcatcher has yet to break out in Korea, they sell really well and have a massive international fandom. That said, they have become a little less metal for the last year or so. Since then, a small amount of unknown K-Pop groups went metal, before switching out after not gaining instant fame. Pink Fantasy was one of those groups. Now, they have returned to the sound, more metal than ever.

So, Poison's seems to build around Dreamvatcher's horror, cult, and dark concept. In a way, it sounds like a grittier cousin of Dreamcatcher's earliest singles. Even the lyrics are reminiscent of their Good Night and Chase Me. The first verse opens with stuttering and aggressive guitars. The members' vocal performances seem a little throwaway. That is, until the pre-chorus. Yechan comes in strongly, providing the shot of melody needed to elevate the song. I initially actually thought it was the chorus, the hook is so well done.

Thankfully, the actual chorus does not disappoint at all. The vocals come together fantastically, providing a strong shot of melody, while the rock-heavy production gets full together. The synths also help build the atmosphere. Also, this is a good point to note, I may not be a fan of the MV, but that is a fantastic choreography. The chorus ends with a loud scream. It is a little out of place, but I can appreciate the aim.

The second verse has a little problem maintaining momentum, but it works for most of it. Thankfully, we are soon back to the fantastic chorus.  The bridge then arrives and opens with a gorgeous piano. Soon enough, the rock beat is back, and SeeA enters with a strong performance. Then, of course, Yechan absolutely rips. Her ad-libs elevate the final chorus to even greater heights. To assist her, we get an excellent guitar riff to close things off, ending the song on a high.

Poison is not perfect, and I am not a fan of the MV. Still, the song is an absolute joy, moving from strength to strength. This is Pink Fantasy's best comeback yet, and one of the best songs this year. The proof that this song is good? I could write a whole Pink Fantasy review without needing to mention the bunny mask. This is such a massive step-up from Lemon Candy.

  2. AN ULTIMATE BOP! This is my favorite metal song of all-time, and that is coming from a non-metal listener. I really do not like metal, but this is something I can live forever. IT IS JUST A CLASSIC!
