Review: BTS - Film Out

 Review: BTS - Film Out

Being the biggest group in the world, it is pretty hard to objectively review a new BTS release. Last year, I overrated Life Goes On by a good bit, and even more so Dynamite. With their agency's increasing growth, this is becoming a bigger problem.

This song is composed by Iyori Shimizu of Back Number, and you can feel some traditional J-Soft-Rock elements. The orchestral and traditional instrumentation helps a lot with that. The rapid delivery performance also is quite engaging.

Unfortunately, the vocal processing from previous Big Hit releases continues here. I would consider this a great standout had the vocals been used properly. The time this is most evident is when Jimin sings in the climax, his airy voice would work perfectly.

The piano and hooks do a bit to redeem this flaw, but maybe a bit 'more' would help. While I noted the issues of the climax, its basic arrangement and melody is a great direction for BTS to follow. Overall, this is a solid release, just not good enough for me to once again be fully invested on whatever they put next.

Despite the low score, this is probably my favorite BTS release since Map of the Soul: 7. Now they just need to channel this energy in the right way.

Rating: 7.5/10

  1. Indeed! We actually have the same score. Film Out is there best since the MOTS: 7 album, and honestly I couldn't be more happy! I actually did some researching and I found some theories about what HYBE might be doing. Last year, they did 70s-80s pop as an overall theme, so many theorists are speculating Rock this time around as ENHYPEN's comeback is psychedelic rock.

I wouldn't be too invested on Rock HYBE since it is much far fetched and they seem to really not like it. But if it were true. Then we are on a ride for 2021. I hope it is true. Anyway, the vocal processing again should stop. That's the tea.

    1. Not vocal processed HYBE doing psychedelic rock, that would be great! Now if they only could find clever and galvanizing uses of it.

  2. They should release this type of sound like they used to do in their 2015-16 era, aggressively emotional.

    1. Exactly. And while their at it, fix the vocal processing issue.
