2020 Highlight Review: The Mamas - Move

2020 was The Mamas-'s year. They won Melodifestivalen (you know, that show where Loreen's Euphoria came from), and were supposed to be in Eurovision, but a certain Pandemic canceled the show. Despite this, The Mamas have a bright future. Soul and Gospel are not used enough in the modern music scene, and it seems this is The Mamas future style.

Anyway, their Melodifestivalen winning track Move stands as their best by far. It has a simple instrumental. The only thing going on over there is the backbeat, the synths, and a vocal sample played heavily, especially through the chorus, which it drives.

The real appeal of the track is the vocals. In an era where production and mixing is put as a priority, it is refreshing to get a vocal track. The pre-chorus stands as the strong moment through the track.

The track really comes to life in the bridge, where the instrumental finally becomes identifiably Soul. A piano also comes here, possibly electric. The final chorus is filled with vocal ad-libs letting the members let loose. It is incredible that when the three members sing together it sounds like a massive choir of at least twenty members. In this lies the real appeal of the track.

 Rating: 9.25/10

  1. Amazingly spectacular! It's like a final song to a musical. This is well written and exquisitely performed. The best vocal performance I've seen this year. The Mamas really have the skills and techniques uniquely and they can really blow the competition away. Solid 8.75!

    1. Well, actually I'd argue there was a better song at Melodifestivalen this year. While it is close, I feel that Dotter's Bulletproof is, as a whole, a better song, though the vocal performance here is better.

The link to Dotter's track is right above :)

    2. Well, I may disagree with you a bit. It seems that I love Bulletproof personally, but when I dig deeper it has no challenging parts, musically or vocally. The song is 8/10. But personally, I agree with you that Dotter's song is better. Unlike The Mamas I felt relieved and better, it was healing I guess. But the lyrics of Bulletproof is much better though. Well, very mixed is it. But it is what it is, for me.

    3. Ya, when it comes for challenging vocal sections and unique musical choices, The Mamas win, but I agree that Dotter's song is more interesting as a whole. It is very close though.
