Review: SoRi - Initial S

Sori has floated around the K-Pop world for a while without truly breaking out, and while I am not sure Initial S is the song that will do so, it plays of the current retro trend, and gives a solid plea for success. It almost being an honorable mention in my end-month list, as I have yet to fully digest the song. Thus, it will be eligible for the September countdown.

It was obvious after the success the Weeknd received this year for his excellent track, 'the blinding lights', we would receive similar songs oversees. SoRi's Initial S sounds part 80s with a bit of anime DNA and should have instantly became a favorite of mine, and while I still like it and I expect it to grow further. The song only utilizes 80% of its potential (that still is a lot).

The moment the track opens, one knows ready for a race, the icy synths further this feel. While this suggests heavy seriousness, the song has a slightly celebratory and fun feel, and would not feel out of place at a rowdy-but-forced-not-to-be beach party. This is mostly due to the jubilant vocals of SoRi. This is initially jarring, but settles itself soon. Though I wonder what a more established star like Sunmi or Taeyeon would do with this as a base track.

The synths pull together during the sledgehammer chorus, which holds the song together. Though the synths and vocals hold this back from being the new 'blinding lights', make no mistake, this is a playlist keeper.

Rating: 8.5/10

Also, am I the only one who hears 'as' instead of 's' in the chorus?

And also, her channel name is a good pun 'SoriNotSorry', :)
